The best films transport you away to another world, leaving your reality, worries and day-to-day trials behind you, in whatever fashion that may be. The most bodacious and excellent films transport you back to a different time, where you can relive old memories and make new ones at the same time.
Back in 1989, I had just turned 15 and the most excellent film hit the cinemas. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. I kid you not when I say I slept, ate, walked, talked and breathed Bill and Ted. I wouldn't go out without a shirt tied around my waist. I had the most excellent waistcoat, I had the soundtrack on repeat and I fully believed that Bill and Ted were here to save the world.
Fast forward to a cold, wet, grey September evening in the year 2020 when the world is at the mercy of a strange new virus called Covid-19, cinemas were closed for months and haven't been open long, the world looks very different. I've so far been to the cinema once since February (I used to go at least twice a week) to see Tenet (time travel rules), so to be able to jump in a time machine and rewind to those carefree days of 1989 would be just what is needed. Would I? I really do think that I would.
So, to have made the brave decision to find a quiet screening and venture back to the cinema once more, I find myself in the company of very good friends. I don't want to give any spoilers, that would be most heinous, however, I'm sure you won't mind me saying that there is SO much time travel, lots of surprises and it is just what we need at THIS point in the space-time continuum. Watch out for British Bill and Ted. They nearly steal the show!
We see so many familiar faces, in unexpected situations, meet our old and dear friends again, their families, a few new faces, travel to the future, the past and back again and so much more. Our heroes need to save the world all over again, little do they know that they do more than save the world in their universe, they're saving us in ours too.
For time travel fans, like me, there's also enough time travel techy talk to have me nearly jumping up and down and this is what I LOVE about this film - a time travel film where there is a lot of time travel!
Cinema has always been my time to switch off, feel inspired by wonderful storytelling and filmmaking and open my imagination to so many possibilities. I've missed that so much and it's starting to show. Tonight I feel transported, inspired, lost in another world and most importantly, I laughed, smiled and had so much fun. Bill and Ted and everyone involved in making this fantastic conclusion to a brilliant story, my past, present and future selves thank you. Party on, dudes.
