Rocketman Review - May 2019

So, I dragged myself away from my beloved Avengers and the warm blanket of the MCU and ventured into 'Rocketman' territory. I didn't really know what to expect. It's been trailed a lot and for quite some time. I get to thinking ..hmmm. Anyway, again, as with my review of Aladdin, musicals have to win me over. If you're not an instant musical fan, I always find the first 5 minutes of any musical the 'bedding' in section where you realise that you are either going to love it or hate it and this few minutes can feel almost awkward as you almost hold your breath in anticipation of how you're spending the next couple of hours. It always takes this long to get into the particular beat of any film really, but especially a musical. And after a couple of nervous moments, I followed the beat that Rocketman was dancing to. This could have been an ordinary, somewhat boring musical, but instead they kept suprising us. The tone, beat and type of musical changed frequently, sometimes scene by scene. Sometimes that is bad, and can be one hell of a mess or mish mash and might confuse some, or put people off, however, I liked the way they did this and it kept the film surprising and fresh and stopped it from stagnating or being 'samey'. For example, one minute they were in a full blown musical number which would have been at home in 'Grease' and the next in a gritty scene which would have been at home on the stage of 'Rent' and then followed up by an abstract or surreal dance sequence. Other scenes could have been straight out of BoRap. It made it more unusual and unexpected than I thought, with some scenes even quite hard to watch and much grittier than BoRap. To quote Wanda in Infinity War 'Yes, it works'. Taron Egerton was simply amazing and even if you don't like Elton John much, this is a film which shows off just how talented this guy is. It's worth watching for him alone. Egerton and Jamie Bell have great on screen chemistry and are both fantastic. In an embarassing aside, I completely forgot Jamie Bell was in the film and kept thinking 'wow, who's he, he's great'. Lol. There are probably quite a few scenes cut from this film, as it seems like some sections could have been longer and were slightly abrupt but nothing which took away from the film. I found myself going through a range of emotions and generally just sitting there smiling and leaving the cinema feeling uplifted and very very happy with how I'd spent my two hours. You can tell it got me by this being one of my longest reviews in ages!
