Turtle Power!

So, we need to talk about Turtles! Specifically, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

There have been many film versions of the turtles over the years and for me, it was the 1990 film and the hit single which accompanied it, Turtle Power. I remember the video so well!

I've seen the 2014 and 2016 films but there are numerous other sequels off the original film, other cartoons etc. which I've not seen and didn't know anything about until researching more after seeing this new release. I didn't realise there was so much of the Ninja Turtles!

I need to admit that I nearly didn't go. I was tired and thought "Is this film for me?" It really really was!

It's beautiful, sweet, funny, moving and just an absolute joy from beginning to end.

The animation style is gorgeous. Along similar lines to Spider-Verse but in a more hand drawn style. It's a funny thing but this style of animation, for me, just made it feel so real. I was immediately absorbed into the beat, style and storyline.

This particular take is a coming of age story. We find out how the Ninja Turtles came to be and, for me, the uninitiated, it was really good to know all their background. We meet the Turtles struggling to keep to their father's wishes. To stay disconnected from the human world. He wants to protect them from what he went through, he wants to keep them safe in their sewer, in their own little world and family. They of course as teenagers want to be part of the world they only can watch and wish to be part of and their curiosity, of course, gets the better of them.

They meet budding journalist April, who kick starts their adventure and quest to save the city and be loved and accepted by all.

It's a colourful, slick, well-paced, funny, emotional and moving ride. I loved it!

So, the next time you wonder "is this film really for me...." I'd say, just go. You could have an amazing experience and discover new genres, films and filmmaking.
